Dua When It Rains

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا
Allahumma sayyiban nafi'an
O Allah, (make it) a beneficial rain cloud.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1032 · Sahih

Where this dua comes from

Narrated by Aisha, who described the Prophet ﷺ saying this whenever he saw rain. It's a short dua asking not simply for rain, but for beneficial rain — nafi'an, from the same root as manfa'ah (benefit) — distinguishing it from rain that causes harm through flooding or damage. This distinction matters in the broader hadith literature on weather: rain itself is described elsewhere as a mercy and a time when supplication is especially likely to be answered (a separate, weaker narration encourages making dua generally during rainfall), but this specific line is the one most directly attributed to the moment rain starts, asking that this particular instance of it be a good one rather than assuming all rain is automatically a blessing.

When to recite

As rain begins to fall.
