Dua After Waking Up

Praise be to Allah, who gave us life after having taken it from us, and to Him is the return.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6312 · Sahih

Where this dua comes from

This is the direct companion to the sleeping dua above, and the two are best understood together: one is said going into sleep, treating it as a kind of death, and this one is said coming out of it, treating waking as a kind of resurrection. Reported by Hudhayfah and by Al-Bara ibn 'Azib with near-identical wording in Bukhari, it is one of the shortest and most memorized lines in the daily adhkar precisely because it's meant to be the very first thing said each day, before speech turns to anything else. Some narrations pair it with stretching or sitting up before continuing to the rest of the morning routine.

When to recite

Immediately upon waking, before getting out of bed.
