Dua for Travel

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun
Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have accomplished this by ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we will return.
Sahih Muslim 1342 · Sahih

Where this dua comes from

This dua is drawn almost word for word from the Quran (43:13-14), and the hadith in Sahih Muslim records the Prophet ﷺ reciting it upon mounting his ride before a journey, then adding takbir three times and a further supplication asking for righteousness and ease in the trip ahead, and protection for those left behind. The verse's original context is about the general blessing of transport — that a person did not build the ability to travel by land or sea themselves, it was given to them — which is why it works as a travel dua specifically: it reframes the act of travelling, however routine, as something that depends on provision beyond one's own control. It's commonly shortened in daily use to the line above, recited whether the "vehicle" is a plane, a car, or public transport.

When to recite

On setting out on a journey, once seated in the vehicle.
