Dua for Leaving the Bathroom

غُفْرَانَكَ
Ghufranak
I seek Your forgiveness.
Sunan Abi Dawud 30; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 7 · Hasan

Where this dua comes from

Narrated by Aisha, this is one of the shortest reported duas in the entire hadith corpus — a single word. Its brevity has drawn some discussion among scholars over exactly why forgiveness is being sought at this particular moment, since no wrongdoing has been described; the more common explanation is that it reflects a broader habit of seeking Allah's forgiveness even in ordinary transitions of the day, or specifically a sense of gratitude at the relief and ease that following a basic bodily function, framed as a favor not to be taken for granted. Practically, it's one of the easiest adhkar to memorize precisely because there's nothing to memorize beyond the single word.

When to recite

On leaving, once outside.
