Most comparisons of prayer apps compare the wrong things: how the interface looks, how many adhan recordings are bundled, whether there is a widget. Those are real preferences, but they are not what makes an app right or wrong for you. Two apps with identical features can show Fajr an hour and a half apart, and neither is broken.

Here is what actually separates them, roughly in order of how much difference it makes.

1. Whether it supports your calculation method

Fajr and Isha have no directly observable clock time — they are defined by how far the sun sits below the horizon, and different authorities settled on different angles. An app that only offers one method, or silently defaults to one and hides the setting, has made a scholarly choice on your behalf.

How much that choice is worth depends entirely on where you live. We measured five common methods across a full year: near Mecca they span about twenty minutes, in Istanbul up to forty-three, and in London, Stockholm and Reykjavík they reach roughly two hours at the height of summer. So the first question for any app is whether it lets you select the convention your local mosque follows. If it does not, everything else about it is decoration.

2. How it behaves at high latitude

This is the item most comparisons miss entirely, and it is the one that separates a serious implementation from a careless one.

Far enough north, the sun stops reaching the required angle at all, and there is simply no angle-based Fajr or Isha to compute. In Tromsø that is the case for sixty-nine days of 2026. Every app still shows a time for those days, because showing nothing is unacceptable — which means every app is applying a substitute rule, and the rule is a scholarly choice the app has made silently.

It starts earlier and more subtly than the polar circle, too. Above roughly 48° of latitude, implementations typically cap the angle result with a night-fraction rule in summer. When that cap binds, every calculation method returns the identical time — so two northern apps can agree exactly in June and diverge by an hour a fortnight later. Agreement there is not a sign of correctness; it is a sign that your chosen method has stopped being applied.

A good app says which high-latitude rule it is using and lets you change it. A careless one shows a time and says nothing.

3. Whether the notifications actually arrive

This is mundane and it is why people abandon apps. A prayer reminder that arrives four minutes late, or not at all because the phone was in a focus mode, has failed at the only job that mattered.

Both mobile platforms have specific mechanisms for alerts that must break through silent and focus modes, and they are not what an ordinary notification uses. There is no way to inspect this from a store listing — the honest test is to install the app, set a reminder for a few minutes ahead, put the phone in do-not-disturb, and see what happens. Do that once before you rely on it for Fajr.

4. What it does with your location

Prayer times and the qibla are arithmetic on coordinates; neither needs a server. An app that keeps working in airplane mode is showing you that it computes locally, which is both a privacy property and a reliability one — it will not fail you in a basement or abroad without data.

5. Whether the religious content is sourced

If the app carries duas or hadith, look at whether each one names its source and grading, or whether supplications simply appear with no attribution. This is not pedantry: unattributed material circulates widely and some of it is weak or fabricated, and an app that does not say where a dua comes from cannot be checked.

The same test applies to translations. A named, standard translation can be verified; an anonymous one cannot.
