Anyone who has prayed in an unfamiliar room has had the thought: this is roughly right, but is roughly right enough? It is a question that causes a surprising amount of quiet anxiety, particularly for people who travel or who have just started praying.
It has two halves, and they pull in opposite directions. The geometric half is unforgiving. The scholarly half is unusually accommodating, and the reason it is accommodating is the geometry.
What a small angle actually costs you
Direction errors compound with distance, and the distances here are large. Taking the great-circle bearing from each city to the Kaaba and asking how far sideways of it you end up:
- From Cairo (1,287 km). 1° off misses by 22 km; 5° off misses by 113 km.
- From Istanbul (2,405 km). 1° off misses by 42 km; 5° off misses by 210 km.
- From London (4,794 km). 1° off misses by 84 km; 5° off misses by 419 km.
- From Jakarta (7,920 km). 1° off misses by 138 km; 5° off misses by 693 km.
- From New York (10,306 km). 1° off misses by 180 km; 5° off misses by 902 km.
And why exactness is not available to anyone
Now the other direction. The Kaaba is a building roughly 11 by 13 metres. Seen from London, it subtends an angle of about 0.00016 degrees. From New York, 0.00007 degrees.
No compass resolves that. No phone magnetometer comes within four orders of magnitude of it. Neither does a perfectly surveyed mihrab, and neither did any instrument available at any point in Islamic history. Facing the structure itself, from any distance, is not a thing a human being can do.
That is not a modern problem discovered by GPS. It was obvious to classical jurists, who had the same geometry and reasoned about it directly.
What the scholars concluded
The classical discussion distinguishes facing the Kaaba itself — the 'ayn — from facing its direction, the jihah. For someone standing in Mecca who can see it, the first is required. For everyone else, the majority position across the schools is that facing the direction is what is required, precisely because facing the structure is not achievable.
There is a real scholarly difference here — the Shafi'i school is generally read as requiring more effort toward the 'ayn, while the Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali positions are usually stated in terms of the jihah — and it is not this site's place to rule between them. What is uncontroversial is the practical upshot that follows from all of them: you are required to make a genuine, reasonable effort to determine the direction, not to achieve a precision no instrument offers.
There is also broad agreement on what happens when you get it wrong having tried honestly. If you made a reasonable effort and later discover you were off, the prayer stands. If you realise mid-prayer, you turn and continue. The obligation attaches to the effort, not to the outcome.
So what counts as a reasonable effort
A bearing calculated from your coordinates, aligned as well as your surroundings allow, is comfortably a reasonable effort — better, in fact, than most of Islamic history had available. The failure cases worth caring about are not the degree or two of compass wobble; they are the errors large enough to put you in a different direction entirely.
Those are worth knowing about because they are common and they are silent:

In a room where you genuinely cannot tell
Hotel rooms, aircraft, hospitals and windowless offices all produce the same situation: no reliable compass, no marked direction, and a prayer that is due.
The established answer is to make your best judgement — using anything available, including the direction of sunrise, an established marking in the building, or a bearing read from a device before you lost signal — pray, and not repeat it afterwards. What is not required is standing in a corridor with a phone for ten minutes while the prayer time runs out. The rule accommodates uncertainty on purpose, because the people who wrote it also prayed in unfamiliar places.
