Dua for Entering Home

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayral-mawlaji wa khayral-makhraji, bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi rabbina tawakkalna
O Allah, I ask You for the best entrance and the best exit. In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah, our Lord, we place our trust.
Sunan Abi Dawud 5096 · Hasan

Where this dua comes from

This longer dua is reported as advice given by the Prophet ﷺ to a man who complained that his household affairs kept slipping into disorder — he was told to say this on entering his house, and then to greet those inside with salam even if no one was there to hear it. The phrase "best entrance, best exit" (khayral-mawlaji, khayral-makhraji) reads as broader than just the physical doorway; classical commentary reads it as covering both the literal act of entering and leaving and, by extension, the state one is in when doing so — arriving home without carrying trouble in with you, and leaving without leaving trouble behind. In everyday practice it's often shortened simply to saying Bismillah on entry, especially by children learning the adhkar for the first time.

When to recite

On entering home, before or as the door opens.
