Dua for Illness
Where this dua comes from
Narrated by Aisha, who described the Prophet ﷺ reciting this while visiting the sick, sometimes accompanied by wiping the affected area with his right hand. It's built around one of Allah's names used specifically here — ash-Shafi, the Healer — and closes with a request that stands out for its completeness: not just healing, but a healing that leaves nothing behind (la yughadiru saqama), addressing both the current ailment and any lingering trace of it. This dua is one of the more commonly recited in hospital visits and during personal illness, and it's often paired with ruqyah — reciting Quranic verses (commonly the last three surahs, al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and an-Nas) while blowing lightly on the hands and passing them over the body, a practice separately attested in the hadith literature.
When to recite
For oneself when unwell, or recited while placing the right hand on the area of pain.
